Tuesday Truths

Alright, better late than never! It's been a busy long day but I owe another installment of Tuesday Truths.

Unselfishness... Absolute #3 in our discussion!

Absolutely unselfish, wow I cannot even being to imagine that one! I have streaks of unselfishness where I might do something for someone else because it is the right thing to do. But let's face it, most of us look to get some sort of reward, even if it's something as simple as a good feeling. The problem for this alcoholic is that my self-centeredness is a HUGE part of my disease. So, it is definitely good for me to work toward being perfectly unselfish.

I love helping others, it makes me feel good (oh, so much for unselfishness). I am told in Step 4 that many of my defects of character are simply instincts run wild. We all have instincts for survival. God gave them to us that we would survive and proliferate. The problem is when we seek and become accustomed to getting more than we are due. My selfishness plays a large role in my illness because I tend to live by the motto: "If a little bit is good, a lot must be better." And, so goes my selfishness.

I suppose I've only managed to scratch the surface of unselfishness, mainly by defining its opposite: selfishness. What can I say, it's what I know, lol. I do know that if I wish to be more unselfish, I need to spend more time learning about and seeking God's will in an attempt to be of service to Him and to those around me.

I think that you captured a lot of good stuff here. Getting rid of selfishness is difficult, especially for those of us who hope for some praise for what we do. Unconditional love is probably impossible for most of us, but I'm willing to try.
