Just stop it!

It'll be just a quick one this morning, I've got to get on the road early. The three chambers of commerce in our county put on a monthly leadership class where we go around the county and tour various agencies, companies, services, etc to learn more about what goes on in the county. Class members start each year in Sept and "graduate" in June. This year we've got 14 class members and today we're touring four different manufacturing facilities, and we have a panel of economic development professionals leading a discussion at lunchtime. It should be an interesting day.

It occurs to me in my study of Steps 6 and 7 that if I wish to be free of my defects of character/shortcomings (that is, to have God remove them), I need to stop doing them first. For instance, I can't very well stop using vulgar language if I am using vulgar language. So, that's my message for today, if you want to grow and get rid of some objectionable behaviour, try stopping it :-) (I) Ask God for help each day in removing your (my) obsession for addictive or inappropriate behaviour and He will in His time. In the mean time, behave well. (oh, and did I mention that the practice of Steps 6 and 7 are also a "one day at a time" thing?)

have an awesome Thursday!

For me it has helped on Steps 6 and 7 to try to do the opposite of the trait I'm working to get rid of. I just think it's easier to focus on doing something than not doing something, like being on time instead of being late, being honest instead of not dishonest, etc. Whatever works, but that's just how I've come to think about it. It's described in a really good program book called, "Drop the Rock." Have a good one!

Good thoughts on Steps 6 and 7. I ask God to help me with the defects. He has to remove them but I have to be willing.

Thanks for the advice. I will use it when I get to steps 6 and 7. However I think you can use this in all the steps, give it to God, be willing to change...

My most graphic illustration of this is smoking... I considered it a character defect. I prayed for God to remove the shortcoming. And then I stopped sticking cigarettes into my mouth and lighting them. And having had a cigarette since (1991).
