more meeting talk...

Today is Pinewood Derby day!

Ian has already informed me that he really wants to win a trophy but if he doesn't it's ok because it's fun to work on the cars and race them. I hope he does well with this attitude, we've talked about it before lol. I am proud of his attitude, he's a good boy lol. I love that we have these types of events in Cub Scouts so the boys can learn how to win and lose in a "safe" environment. Some of the dads definitely get carried away wanting to win, but we work hard to teach the boys to do their best, accept the results and be good sports.

So, in the last post I had asked people to share their meeting regimen with me, and why they feel meetings are important. I love what Steve reminded us, about the fact that meetings are vital but they are not the entire program. I couldn't agree with my friend more. I have to get to meetings, to hear about what I need to do. But, for me, that was just the beginning when I first got sober.

I had to hear about what people were doing to stay sober. But, I then had to get out there and do it. I had to share with my sponsor,I had to rpactice the principles in the Steps. I had to put pen to paper, I had to pray. I still have to do all these things today. but, now I go to meetings to share what I do, to be reminded of what its like out there, to meet newcomers, to help, to learn more things about how people are staying sober. So now, at 14 years sober, meetings take on a different role in my recovery.

Amen,Brother.Just going to meeting is not enough, except if you are just trying to get sober, than you have to work the steps and let the steps work for you.I to enjoyed the pinewood derby.I did not win once.and that was OK.Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are all about building charater.

I remember how much of a milestone it was for me when someone came up at a meeting and asked me the same kind of questions that I'd been asking old timers. Really made me feel like I belonged, although I frankly looked over my shoulder initally, thinking they were talking to someone behind me! It's really nice to be able to both give and receive at our meetings, though, and it really brings it all home about how inter-related we all our in our recovery. Thanks for sharing.

Wednesday will be 30 days for me. The meetings saved my life the first two weeks. I just sat there and soaked it in. I felt like I was "home" for the first time in a long time. I make as many meetings as I can per week. Sometimes five if the week is insane and sometimes seven. I have an awesome sponsor and I try not to get overwhelmed because I'm in the infant stage. Being able to drop into people's blogs is a way I stay focused at work. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with a newbie!

I have found that it is all of the components of the program that help me. But I especially enjoy working with others and passing on the message. It is an awesome thing.
