progress, not perfection

This afternoon my wife and I venture down to Dayton for our third session with the marriage counselor. Things have changed for us, we're both making efforts to change our behaviours toward each other in an effort to begin to strengthen our relationship. We're reading a book together that deals with communication and things seem to be better. They are not perfect, and we don't expect that they will be perfect. However, we're doing better, we're doing different things, changing behaviours. I had no clue how difficult marriage would be. I only pray that we both continue to work at this, a day at a time. Per our usual routine, we'll grab lunch out together as a part of our day. We've never done much "dating" since Ian arrived so this has been a nice development.

Wish us well, and thanks for listening. We owe alot of this stuff to AA and Al-Anon.

I hope things went well. My husband and I will be married 17 years in October. I can honestly tell you about 5 were blissful the rest tough. My alcoholism didn't help. In our second year of marriage we attended a marriage counselor. I commend you, they are hard. You want someone to give you the answers and they don't. Once again you get to figure it out. I sometimes feel at a meeting that I'm one of the few that aren't divorced or in the process of. My marriage is far from perfect, gaping holes everywhere, but it didn't undo in a day, so it can't be healed in a day either. 24 hours at a time. Alcoholism maybe our disease but the good news is marriage takes two and it sounds like you are both willing to make it work. Blessings to you both!

A date is a good thing in a marriage. Good for you.

I've been there and it can be hard. Glad to hear that you can still sit down and "break bread" together. Also, really good that you can use your programs to help work your way through it. All the best!

AMEN brother. I'm in a bad place with my relationship right now, But my HP is helping me thru. He closes bars, boards them up. Even with my best intentions I couldn't get a drink. I picked up the phone and used the tools that were given to me as a gift.

Love you BRO
